Sigmund Freud, an Austrian neurologist, developed psychoanalysis, which is a personality theory that emphasizes the importance of unconscious mental processes, sexual urges, and early developmental effects. His dynamic theory of personality and the psychosexual stages of personality development were included in psychoanalysis (Hergenhahn & Henley, 2019). Some of the components of his theory were entrenched in the German culture in which Freud was raised, while others he learnt as a medical student training in the Helmhotzian tradition. If Freud had emigrated to the United States in 1920 instead of remaining in Austria, his psychoanalysis could have been drastically changed. This period in psychology's development as a discipline saw significant changes, particularly in the United States.
